The unique location in the international sea route from East to west and free from recurrent natural disasters like tornados, tidal waves and volcanoes made Sri Lanka as an important centre in the global sea transportation.

With the invasion of the western nations namely the Portuguese, Dutch and English men from the 15th century onwards, the volume of sea transportation, development of ports and provision of ship supply services in Sri Lanka made a rapid growth. This has paved the solid platform for the gradual development and expansion of the international trade and tourism.

The international shipping route from East to West lies just below the southern coast of Sri Lanka. There are three main ports in Sri Lanka; Colombo, Galle and Trincomalee. Another port was recently developed in Hambantota. Colombo is the biggest port in terms of volume of ships handled, facilities available and operations. The import and export trade of the country increases annually which itself propels the arrival of ships and demand for support services required for the international trade. Sri Lanka is a peaceful country heading towards a rapid development. Having ended the terrorism which had sprung the socio-economic set up of Sri Lanka for more than 25 years, now the peace prevails throughout the country. Sri Lanka takes higher values in the development index specially, the life span, literacy level and per capita income. The country is now inclined more towards the industrialization and many large scale factories have been set up in Sri Lanka both by the foreign investors and local entrepreneurs. Most of the international companies have their presence in Sri Lanka and a world class business climate is available here. With liberalized economic policies, there are no entry barriers to any potential businessman to open and run businesses in Sri Lanka. As mentioned earlier, international trading activities of Sri Lanka becoming higher every year not only the value wise but also in terms of volume of shipments handled and type of goods exported/imported. Owing to its very location in the major sea routes, Sri Lanka makes a strategic linking centre between west Asia and south East Asia. Sri Lanka’s strategic location close to the major shipping routes to and from the Far East markets makes it an important transshipment hub in the Asian region. From our office at Galle, JSML could provide ship supply services to international shipping traffic lanes off the southern tip of the island. Sri Lanka is also providing fuel bunkering services to the ships that pass through in the international sea route which is very much closer to the southern coasts of the country. Ship supply services are another area where there is a high demand and most ships do get this service in their voyages. Sri Lankan ports are of world class in terms of facilities, efficiency & support services.
