With the invasion of the western nations namely the Portuguese, Dutch and English men from the 15th century onwards, the volume of sea transportation, development of ports and provision of ship supply services in Sri Lanka made a rapid growth. Owing to its very location in the major sea routes, Sri Lanka makes a strategic linking centre between west Asia and south East Asia. Sri Lanka’s strategic location close to the major shipping routes to and from the Far East markets makes it an important transshipment hub in the Asian region.
